If Vampire Knight started out as a shoujo romance, it is not staying that way for long. Despite the comedic aspects of this episode’s “Saint Chocolate Day” celebration (reflecting the Japanese tradition - originated by a chocolate manufacturer in 1956! - that girls give chocolates to boys they like on Valentines Day), darker themes are beginning to emerge. And so, another installment of Kaiba goodness. No exploding hentai this time, though. As if for a change of pace, we learn about the grim reality of body trade. In a world where bodies can be changed like furniture, the poor sell their bodies to the rich and beautiful young bodies are an expensive commodity. I’m sure mothers on planet Toto tell their daughters to be careful or someone will steal their bodies. Oh, and Warp gets a new body in this episode, too. I wonder if that’s a trend… Enjoy.

This show is like a dirty little secret in the anime watching world outside of Japan. A significant number of downloads but few have come out to discuss the show - the rest are probably too shy (or even ashamed) to be known to be watching this show.

Episode 3 moves us ahead with Toki settling in nicely into the Edo world. His easygoing friction-avoidance nature has the ladies in that era eating out from the palm of his hand. Before he knows it, he is soon involved in the bigger scheme of things. This episode has a nice little touch with a mini youkai who recites in sing-song fashion bits of Japanese legend that is fascinating and, at the same time, provide hints as to where the show is going and of Toki’s background.

While it may seem slow paced, the anime actually moves us along quite fast with the necessary setup and character introductions towards the meat-and-bones of the series. The slow-paced feel is likely due to this show being dialogue-intensive. Do watch out for next episode as the pace picks up and there’s plenty of action.

If it wasn’t obvious from the first episode, this one should drive home the fact that it’s a show for adults, despite its deceptively kiddish look. It goes without saying that you shouldn’t watch this episode with minors around; if you haven’t done your homework, you’d better finish that, too, because you’ll find yourself pondering about its implications long after it’s over. Oh, and your undivided attention is required in the first 30 seconds.

Fanservice, in my Kaiba? It’s more likely than you think! If this was hentai, appropriate tags for this episode would include softcore, guro, S&M/bakunyuu (implied), yuri (technically), futanari (again, technically), orgy (implied), and incest (or an Electra complex at the very least). This screencap is just the tip of the iceberg. Enjoy.

You know, when I first started watching this series I didn’t even notice that Jun Fukuyama was the main character’s VA, but in this episode when he uses his evil voice the only thing that came to my mind was Lelouche… the fact that he has that red eye as well… it’s weird how I don’t think I ever would have noticed the voice actor at all if it wasn’t for his past roles, yet now I love his voice and recognize it pretty easily.

He’s starting to end up in every second show though…

Anyway, this episode focuses on developing the main characters and strengthening their personalities, I can’t help but hate that monk though…
